Five-year-old Drake is full of curiosity and determination, but living with Dravet Syndrome has made even the simplest daily activities a challenge. Diagnosed as an infant after his first seizure at just three months old, Drake began experiencing frequent and severe atonic “drop” seizures. Without warning, he would suddenly lose muscle control and fall, sometimes more than 100 times a day, putting him at constant risk of serious injury. His world, and his family’s, quickly became centered around keeping him safe.
At home, something as routine as sitting down for a meal was not simple. Drake relied on a makeshift setup using a tomato insert in a heavy dining chair. It was difficult to move and did not allow him to sit independently or comfortably at the table. Everyday moments many families take for granted required extra planning, effort, and worry.
Drake has spent much of his young life in therapies at ChildServe, working to build his strength, coordination, and communication skills. Last year at the Young Variety Sporting Clay Classic, a new chapter began.
That day, Drake received a Rifton Activity Chair through Variety’s Mobility Program, and it changed everything.
With proper support, a secure chest harness, and adjustable features like a tray and footrest, Drake can now safely sit, play, eat, and engage with his family. The chair not only protects him during seizures, but also gives him the freedom to be more present and independent in everyday life.
This chair has given Drake his quality of life back. It has helped keep him safe while allowing him to participate in the world around him. We are incredibly grateful to Variety and their donors for being a light in such a difficult journey.

The impact did not stop at home. Drake’s school saw the difference the chair made and purchased one for their classroom, helping not only Drake but other children who need safe and supportive seating.
Because of donors like you, kids like Drake are gaining more than equipment. They are gaining safety, independence, and joy.
