For many young people, stepping into a gym can feel intimidating. Without the right environment, equipment, or encouragement, youth—especially young girls—may never discover the confidence and strength that comes from movement and physical activity.

Thanks to a grant from Variety, Raise the Bar Initiative purchased youth-specific training equipment, allowing participants to learn proper form and train using equipment designed for their size and ability level. This ensures youth can safely develop strength while building the skills and confidence that come from trying something new.

“With this support, we’re able to offer young girls the chance to build strength in a space where they feel truly seen and supported. They’re excited to try the equipment, move the barbells, and push themselves, experiences they may not feel comfortable pursuing in a traditional gym.”

Abbie Mork, Executive Director of Raise the Bar Initiative

During a recent visit from a group of young girls from the Boys & Girls Club, the impact of the new youth equipment provided through the Variety grant was immediately visible. One participant in particular arrived feeling nervous and unprepared, she wasn’t involved in sports, hadn’t used weights before, and even came wearing jeans and boots because she didn’t expect to participate.

But the moment she walked through RBI’s doors, everything shifted. Our staff greeted the girls warmly and offered comfortable workout clothes to help them feel at ease. They asked simple, empowering questions: “What would you like to try?” and “Which equipment interests you?” giving each girl the choice to explore at her own pace.

With the addition of youth-appropriate barbells, boxes, bands, and dumbbells, this student was able to learn proper movements using equipment designed specifically for her size and ability. What began as hesitation quickly turned into excitement. By the end of the session, she was smiling, moving confidently, and proudly demonstrating what she had learned.

Her coordinator shared that she didn’t want to leave, and spent the ride home talking nonstop about her experience. The visit not only introduced her to strength training but also showed her what it feels like to be welcomed, supported, and capable in a gym environment.

This transformation - nervousness turning into confidence - is exactly the type of impact made possible through Variety’s support. Funds from the Variety grant are helping young girls discover strength, agency, and a sense of belonging they may not experience in traditional fitness spaces.
