When Gunnar was born, doctors discovered a rare genetic disorder, pulmonary hypertension, and holes in his heart. His first months of life included multiple surgeries and an 11-week stay in the NICU. Even now, at just two years old, Gunnar has spent over 30 weeks in the hospital battling respiratory viruses and other complications.

During one of his recent hospital stays, Gunnar’s family learned about the Variety Compassion Fund. His mom, Tiffany, shared:

“Gunnar needed a continuous blood sugar monitor that wasn’t going to be covered by insurance. I didn’t know how I was going to afford both our regular expenses and this extra cost. Our social worker offered funds from the Compassion Fund to help with gas for follow-up appointments and relieve some of that stress so I could focus on what he needed. I feel so humbled by this donation. It’s the small things that matter the most. For people to take time to donate to something they may never see the impact of — that’s huge. We’re so grateful for the compassion we’ve experienced and hope to pay it forward one day.”
