A childhood cancer diagnosis affects the entire family. Thanks to the support of Variety – the Children's Charity of Iowa, Children's Cancer Connection (CCC) is expanding its statewide reach to ensure more Iowa families have access to meaningful programs, lasting connections, and a community that understands.
Variety's grant supported several statewide programs, including Family Outings in Central, Eastern, and Western Iowa, Winter Wishes, and Exploration Expedition, a teen-focused weekend that brings together young people affected by childhood cancer.
For Wilson's family, a Variety-supported Family Outing in Western Iowa offered more than a fun day of bowling - it provided a sense of belonging.
We really enjoyed getting to attend the Western Iowa outing. We welcome experiences with families who know what we're going through. It can be a much easier time for us to relax and for our son to not feel judged or noticeably different from his peers.
Wilson's Mom, Devin
For Mya's family, Children's Cancer Connection has been a source of strength for nearly two decades. Diagnosed with brain cancer in 2007, Mya underwent two brain surgeries and 74 weeks of intensive chemotherapy. Although she beat cancer, treatment left her with permanent hearing loss, memory and comprehension challenges, and significant dental issues. Throughout multiple relapses and years of uncertainty, CCC has supported not only Mya, but her entire family.
That support had a lasting impact on Mya's sister, Leia, who found lifelong friendships through CCC camps and now serves as a Youth Board Member. This spring, thanks to Variety's support, Leia attended Exploration Expedition.
Attending Exploration Expedition was incredibly meaningful. It gave me the chance to reconnect with my camp friends who truly understand the challenges that come with having a sibling affected by cancer. Thanks to Variety's support, I was able to attend this special weekend, and I am so grateful for the opportunity.

Variety – the Children's Charity and CCC both aim to serve children throughout Iowa. Support programs such as Exploration Expedition bring children from across the state together to connect around their unique cancer journeys. Variety's grant helps us make a big impact in these families' lives.
