Southwest Iowa Families in Clarinda, IA provides essential family support services to families with children ages 0–5, with a focus on reducing preventable injuries and supporting early childhood health. By equipping caregivers with practical tools, education, and resources, the organization helps families create safe, clean, and nurturing home environments where children can grow and thrive.
Thanks to a Variety Grant, Southwest Iowa Families was able to purchase basic, yet critical, safety and household items for its Healthy Homes Rewards Program within the Positive Family Program. These items include car seats, safety gates, pack ‘n plays, laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, and brooms - resources that help families maintain safe and healthy living spaces for their children.
One powerful example of this impact comes from Fremont County, where a mother with two young children (a newborn and a two-year-old) shared with her Family Support Worker that she urgently needed two car seats. During a monthly home visit, the Family Support Worker was able to provide both car seats through the Healthy Homes Rewards Program. Because the worker is also a Certified Car Seat Technician, she ensured both seats were installed correctly and safely. The family also received car seat education materials to support ongoing safety.
For this mother, the assistance brought immediate relief. The cost of purchasing two car seats had been a significant financial burden, and receiving them with with proper installation and education gave her peace of mind and increased confidence in caring for her children.
“To be able to provide these necessary safety items helps our workers build stronger connections with families. These funds help meet the needs of many families in our community by reducing their financial burden.”
Erica King, Positive Family Program Manager
