For children with special healthcare needs, access to the right care can make a lasting difference. Through a grant from Variety – the Children’s Charity of Iowa, ChildServe is expanding its Des Moines location to help more children and families access specialized care closer to home.
Bronwyn’s Story
When Kristin and Adam first noticed developmental delays in their daughter, Bronwyn, they had more questions than answers. At 20 months old, Bronwyn was diagnosed with FOXG1 Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that impacts development, movement and communication.
Bronwyn needed specialized care and support throughout the day. Her family found that support through ChildServe’s Medical Childcare program, where caregivers, nurses and therapists work together to meet her unique needs.
Now 15, Bronwyn continues building communication, independence and daily living skills while having the opportunity to socialize and simply enjoy being a kid.
Life with a special needs family member is hard, but ChildServe makes it easier by having multiple services under one roof. It’s amazing to drop her off at one location and know she will get to work with multiple experts and socialize with other kids each day.

Rosa’s Story
Three-year-old Rosa came to Iowa from Bulgaria in 2023 after being adopted by her family. Because of her complex medical needs and limited medical history, her parents faced many unknowns as they worked to understand how best to support her.
Rosa began receiving occupational and physical therapy at ChildServe – Des Moines, where her therapists created a treatment plan tailored to her unique needs.
Since beginning therapy, Rosa has grown stronger and more confident. She is now walking, running and climbing more efficiently while continuing to build skills for greater independence.
Our partnership with ChildServe has truly been crucial to Rosa’s progress.

Variety Makes an Impact
ChildServe’s new Des Moines location, made possible in part by Variety’s grant, more than doubles the organization’s space from 9,000 to 27,000 square feet.
Opened in May 2026, the expanded center provides room for pediatric rehabilitation, Medical Childcare, autism services and mental health therapy. The expansion will allow ChildServe to increase the number of children served in Des Moines from 60 to as many as 600 in the coming years.
For children like Bronwyn and Rosa, that means greater access to the specialized services they need to grow, build independence and live a great life.
The generous contributions of donors like Variety – the Children’s Charity, will allow ChildServe to expand in Des Moines. The facility will improve access and decrease barriers to care for children with special healthcare needs.
