When All Aboard for Kids (AAFK) merged with The Arc of Story County in January 2026, it brought together a shared commitment to supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and the families who rely on them.
One of the programs continuing through The Arc of Story County is STEAM Academy, an inclusive summer enrichment program designed for autistic youth. Through hands-on activities focused on science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math, campers have opportunities to learn, explore new interests, build friendships, and strengthen social and motor skills. Community outings and engaging activities also help campers build confidence and independence in a supportive environment tailored to their needs.
For many families, access to specialized programs like STEAM Academy can make a meaningful difference - but the cost of summer enrichment can also be a barrier.
That’s where Variety’s support comes in.
A Variety grant provided tuition scholarships for children to participate in The Arc of Story County’s STEAM Academy summer enrichment program, helping ensure more families could access an inclusive and supportive summer experience.
For siblings Hana and Alan, that support meant they could attend camp together.
Both children have developmental disabilities and benefit from individualized support, smaller group settings, and caring staff who understand their unique needs. Traditional summer programs can be overwhelming, but STEAM Academy gives Hana and Alan a place where they feel welcomed, supported, and celebrated for who they are.
The siblings have attended STEAM Academy since 2022, and over the past two summers, Hana’s growth has been especially inspiring. Her one-on-one Educational Associate, Michele, has watched her confidence blossom.
Hana has made so much progress since last year. She participated in all the fun activities as well as the classroom schedule. This was remarkable growth for her. Hana’s ability to focus and listen to direction has improved significantly. Seeing her big, beautiful smile and knowing she was happy to come to camp every day makes my heart happy.

For Hana, that progress meant participating more fully, following directions, engaging in activities, and arriving at camp each day excited to be there.
For Hana and Alan, their summer at STEAM Academy was filled with learning, laughter, friendships, and new experiences. For their parents, the scholarships provided peace of mind knowing their children were safe, supported, and thriving - along with a much-needed opportunity to recharge.
Variety’s support helped remove a financial barrier and gave Hana and Alan the opportunity to participate in a program where they could grow, connect, and simply enjoy being kids.
