Thanks to a Variety Grant, youth in Story County are reaching new heights — literally and figuratively!
This funding helped cover the installation of an Everlast Traverse Climbing Wall in the Club’s multipurpose room, launching an exciting new initiative: Climbing for Success. For the hundreds of youth ages 6–18 served by Boys & Girls Clubs of Story County, this wall is a tool for growth.
Being selected for this grant is a game-changer for our organization. These funds make it possible to launch our Climbing for Success program, which provides youth with safe, structured opportunities to build confidence, resilience, and teamwork through experiential learning. This investment allows us to offer staff-led sessions, an inclusive curriculum, and developmentally appropriate activities that complement traditional education—helping kids grow physically, emotionally, and socially.
Ryan Santi, CEO
The Club provides safe spaces, enriching programs, and caring mentors who help young people succeed in school, build healthy relationships, and develop lifelong skills. The Traverse Climbing Wall strengthens that mission by giving youth a structured, supportive environment to build resilience, teamwork, and confidence through hands-on, experiential learning. And the impact is already visible!
Nico’s Climb to Confidence
Eight-year-old Nico was nervous the first time he approached the climbing wall. With encouragement from staff, he learned to take it one step at a time. As he moved across the wall, his hesitation turned into determination.
“I didn’t think I could do it,” Nico said, “but now I want to climb higher every time.”
Meredith Finds Her Focus
Seven-year-old Meredith loves adventure but sometimes struggles to stay focused. The climbing wall gave her a new outlet — one that challenges both her body and her mind.
“I like figuring out where to put my hands and feet — it’s like a puzzle,” she shared proudly.
About Variety’s Grant Program
Each year, Variety – the Children’s Charity of Iowa invites nonprofits across the state to apply for funding that advances its mission of caring for children who are at risk, underprivileged, critically ill, or living with special needs.
Through a careful, multi-step review process, Variety ensures every dollar invested delivers meaningful, measurable impact. The organization prioritizes tangible resources (equipment, facility improvements, and hands-on tools) that directly benefit children. Administrative expenses are not funded, ensuring donor support goes where it matters most.
The Traverse Climbing Wall at Boys & Girls Clubs of Story County is a powerful example of that commitment in action. Because of Variety’s donors, Iowa kids are building confidence, resilience, and belief in themselves.
