For many students, access to technology plays a critical role in learning, creativity, and building confidence. Yet for some children, especially those in under-resourced communities, opportunities to explore new tools and develop digital skills can be limited.
Thanks to a Variety grant, Children and Family Urban Movement(CFUM) has been able to enhance its Innovation Lab in Des Moines—opening the door for students to explore new technology and develop valuable skills.
Before receiving the Variety grant, CFUM participants had very limited access to technology, with only a couple of shared iPads available for more than 100 students. Today, thanks to Variety’s support, CFUM now maintains a 3-to-1 student-to-technology ratio, allowing students to regularly engage with digital tools that support academic learning and skill development.
Students are able to use this new equipment at least twice a week and we are able to track students academic growth as they practice and use the equipment. We are also able to offer more programming like STEM Club that uses 3D printers and Virtual Reality, Craft Club that uses sewing machines and a Cricut to design and make shirts, pillows, bags, etc.

The impact has already been visible. With more engaging programming and access to technology, students are showing better attendance, stronger academic growth, and fewer behavior referrals.
By supporting CFUM’s Innovation Lab, Variety is helping create an environment where students can explore, learn, and discover what they are capable of achieving. Because when children are given the tools and opportunities to learn, their confidence, and their future, can grow.
