For many children, something as simple as a pair of well-fitting shoes can make a world of difference. Unfortunately, many students in low-income families attend school without proper footwear, affecting their ability to participate fully in classroom activities, recess, and even everyday movement.
Thanks to a grant from Variety – the Children’s Charity of Iowa, Shoes That Fit was able to provide brand-new, well-fitting athletic shoes for 336 students across seven elementary schools in Polk County. Participating schools included Edmunds, Hillis, Hubbell, James B. Morris, Madison, Moore, and Phillips.
By partnering with local schools and community organizations, Shoes That Fit identifies students in need and delivers shoes directly to them. This support removes a basic barrier to learning and participation while fostering confidence, dignity, and a sense of belonging.
Teachers and school staff shared that students were not only more comfortable physically but also more engaged socially and academically once they had shoes that fit properly. For many children, the grant meant attending school without the embarrassment or discomfort that comes from worn-out or ill-fitting footwear.
