11-year-old Receives Help from the Compassion Fund while Fighting Cancer

Variety partners with Blank Children's Hospital, Broadlawns Medical Center, ChildServe, Mary Greeley Medical Center, and MercyOne Des Moines in central Iowa, and Mercy Medical Center and UnityPoint Health-St. Luke's Hospital in eastern Iowa to provide immediate financial relief to families with children who are critically ill or are receiving specialized medical treatment, like Jameson.
“Jameson was about to turn five when he started having severe leg pain and we weren’t sure what was causing it. I had that mom feeling that something wasn’t right, so we went back in and in March of 2017 we had more scans done and he was diagnosed with stage four Neuroblastoma. He has been fighting ever since! It’s been almost seven years of fighting this and going through all different types of treatments. He has received treatments in Des Moines, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Madison, and we are now in Columbus, OH for a trial. This has been a very long journey. Something like this is hard to put into words - some days it feels like we live a normal life, and some days it feels like everything is crashing down. We take it each day, each hour at a time. It makes you realize what the important things in life are," said Grace, Jameson's mom.
"Our social worker at Blank Children’s Hospital told us about the Variety Compassion Fund and how it could help pay for groceries and gas. When I think about people who donate to help this cause, I can’t even put into words how much we appreciate it. When you go through this kind of thing, even just having one kind of stress taken off makes a world of difference. Any little bit helps, I know there are other families who need help like this.”
