Heart of Iowa Big Brothers Big Sisters serves youth ages 6-18 through one-to-one mentoring in Marshalltown, West Marshall, and BCLUW schools (comprised of students from Beaman, Conrad, Liscomb, Union, Whitten, and surrounding rural areas) for school-based mentoring.
Many Littles had never been to an Iowa Wild hockey game until Heart of Iowa Big Brothers Big Sisters received funding from Variety that covered the cost of activities like an Iowa Wild game. The Littles were so excited and screamed when Iowa Wild scored! School-based Bigs and Littles do not always get to do things outside of school, so providing opportunities like this helps the Bigs and Littles bond in a new environment.
In the process of mentoring, Big Brothers Big Sisters helps to instill hope, introduces at-risk children to positive and healthy activities, as well as community resources, and empowers them to set goals and become responsible, committed members of the community. Mentoring helps to increase the self-esteem of young people, increase student academic success, and increase positive social interaction.
